SOAP (Students of Aquatic Pursuits)

Sponsor- Jeff Smith

Aquatic Sciences

The purpose of SOAP is to increase awareness of the world of water (both salt and fresh) and the importance of water not only for humans, but for all living organisms.

Membership in SOAP is open to all students, although the majority of the club is composed of students currently enrolled in the Aquatic Science class.

Topics addressed range from water pollution, to solutions for increasing freshwater resources, to the BP blow-out, to the JASON Project, to careers.  At times we have guest speakers and at times we have general discussions.  Field experiences have also been arranged to explore organisms in Buffalo Bayou to exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Last year's main topic was the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, so we attended programs sponsored by Rice University and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, toured the exhibit at HMNS and looked at modern research being conducted on the ship.

Meetings are announced over the school's PA system durning morning announcements.  Feel free to come by or to join.  We welcome everyone!
